Botulinum toxin then binds to receptors in the target area, reducing the reaction to nerve impulses and thus leading the desired result of reducing the activity of the muscle or sweat glands. Over time, these receptors eventually return to full function (several months following treatment) meaning that the effect of the treatment is temporary.
